Reviving Ancient Art

The exhibition seeks to celebrate the creativity and skill of Mesoamerican artists while challenging the common perception that their work was merely functional or exotic. Instead, the exhibition aims to highlight the complexity and aesthetic value of ancient American art, sparking new conversations and perspectives.

A Journey Through Time and Culture

The artworks on display come from pre-Hispanic Mexico and the southern United States and were created by indigenous artists who were professionally trained and produced works of significant artistic value. Representing cultures from 1500 B.C. to 1500 A.D., these artworks offer a glimpse into the richness and diversity of the civilizations of Mesoamerica and the American Southwest.

a collaborative effort

Curated by students under the direction of Professor Ana Pulido Rull in collaboration with curators from the University of Arkansas Museum, this exhibition presents never-before-seen artifacts to the Northwest Arkansas community. Extensive research and design work culminated in an online and print catalog that provides a deeper understanding of ancient American art.

Celebrating an Artistic Legacy

John Blakinger, director of the University of Arkansas Art History Program, emphasized that the exhibit’s focus on the pre-colonial virtuosity of Native artists provides a fresh perspective on ancient American culture. Laurel Lamb, director of the University of Arkansas Museum, highlighted the rich experience of working with students on the exhibit.
