Lucid Motors Offers Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging Service

With its new RangeXChange technology, Lucid Motors will offer vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging to its U.S. Lucid Air customers.

The feature will allow Lucid Air owners to share battery power with other EV owners. To use the feature, EV owners will need to purchase an adapter and plug it into their vehicle’s charging port.

RangeXChange two-way charging technology allows energy to flow from the Lucid Air’s battery pack to charge another EV at up to 9.6 kW. This means Lucid Air owners can help other EV owners extend their range, especially if they don’t have a charger.

Lucid claims that the RangeXChange feature can add 38-64 kilometers per hour to another EV, depending on the vehicle and charging speed.

Lucid Motors Offers Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging Service

The charging adapter will be available through Lucid later this month.

Lucid offers four Air models with a choice of single, dual or triple-motor powertrains, and the Air’s range varies by model from 590 kilometers in the Pure model to 665 kilometers in the Grand Touring model.

The Air Sapphire sedan is the most powerful model in the Air range, generating more than 895 kW of power from three electric motors. It accelerates from 0-97 km/h (60 mph) in less than two seconds.

Lucid Motors isn’t the only automaker offering vehicle-to-vehicle charging. Ford and Chevrolet also offer V2V charging in their electric vehicles.

V2V charging is a promising technology that could help reduce mileage anxiety and make electric vehicles more suitable for everyday use.
